Last night's tipsy silly annoying blog-venture brought to you by:
(1) Barnard Griffin Chardonney, produced in the classy Idaho in 1997. It was actually a pretty good white - sweet but not overly so, and very wet.
(2) Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay Coconut Rum mixed 50/50 with pineapple juice (NOT from concentrate). I think we're going to experiment more with this mixture, but as is it's pretty dang good.
Neither was very strong in alcohol content, but there's something about wine and girly drinks that makes me act more ridiculously than usual.
I would like to share another piece of amazing art that came out of last night, which was less an affect of the alcohol and more from sitting on the couch watching every Jaws movie. I didn't quite make it to doodling the first one, but I think the other three are easier to summarize anyway.
Being unemployed does have it's slight privileges. Here's another movie I watched on Netflix, that I feel is worthy of everyone else watching!
"You Kill Me" is a movie about an alcoholic hitman. The best and funniest thing about this movie is that the hitman is not an alcoholic because he kills people; he just happens to be an alcoholic, like any other normally employed person might be. This completely made the movie for me. He treats his job like he's just some joe-shmoe, and it makes for some great moments of honestly with those around him.
This movie had such a surprising cast, I'm wondering if this is just a blockbuster type movie that I happened to miss. You'll recognize the main character, Ben Kingsley, from movies like "Lucky Number Slevin", "Schindler's List", and more recently, "Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time". It also has appearances from Luke Wilson, Bill Pullman, and Téa Leoni.
The humor is very dry and semi-dark. There are a lot of moments that sort of take you by surprise, and you have to think about what just happened before you burst into laughter. The flow of the movie was impressive. I thought it was going to be rather slow, but it picked up and kept a great pace.
Here's the synopsis from IMDB:
Frank Falenczyk loves his job. He just happens to be the hit-man for his Polish mob family in Buffalo, New York. But Frank's got a drinking problem and when he messes up a critical assignment that puts the family business in peril, his uncle sends him to San Francisco to clean up his act. Frank is not a touchy-feely kind of guy, but he starts going to AA meetings, gets a sponsor and a job at a mortuary where he falls for the tart-tongued Laurel, a woman who is dangerously devoid of boundaries. Meanwhile, things aren't going well in Buffalo where an upstart Irish gang is threatening the family business.
It was a great movie with just the right brand of dry quirky humor. Go check it out now on Netflix!
I finally headed over to Seattle for a visit! It was a super fun weekend.
On the third I made my way to the Seattle International Beer Festival. In previous years I had gone with the goal of tasting new brews from my favorite breweries and sampling delicious foreign beer that I might not normally get the chance at. However, this year, I decided it would be a good idea to go through the brochure and drink the different beers with the highest alcohol content in the least amount of time possible.
Suffice to say, I do not remember an incredible amount of the actual beer tasting experience. One beer did manage to stand out in my drunken stupor however: Lagunitas "Hop Stoopid" Ale. I didn't want to drink this beer so much as sit with it all day smelling it. The aroma from the hops is amazing and like nothing I've ever had in beer before. It was delicious.
On the fourth I ate lunch with friends at Hooters for a true chicken wing, boobs, and beer american experience. We then headed down to the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival, which was pretty amazing! There was a race called the "Quick and Daring" that we accidentally got front row seats to. The race involves several teams building a boat from salvaged plant-based materials in under 24 hours. Their first test that the boat actually works is setting it in the water for the first leg of the race! Apparently this was the first year that no one managed to completely sink from the start.
Hopefully I'll have an entry going next year, so keep an eye out for that! Below are a few pictures of the festival, including some shots of the Quick and Daring boats. One particularly funny moment was when a team who created their boat out of salvaged parts from the Lady Washington got stuck, and the actual Lady Washington, a very very large ship, threw them a rope and pulled them to the finish.
Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival:
Then for the rest of the night, I got a most excellent view of the fireworks show over Lake Union. We were so close the explosions shook the apartment!
Fourth of July on South Lake Union:
Can't wait for my next visit!
I hope everyone else had a happy 4th of July weekend!
