My dad said the most amazing thing to me yesterday.
I was complaining about having to share the Wii with my little brother, as usual, and he turns to me and says, "Well, I Haven't even gotten to play it yet! You need to show me how that thing works so I can use it too!"
My mouth dropped. This is coming from my dad, the guy who has Windows 95 and dial-up in his room...the guy who tells me to put down my stupid game thing when we're in the car...the guy who bought Guitar Hero game only for the 360 because he thought my PS2 controller would work for it. HE asked me to teach him how to play the Wii.
It's a holiday miracle! I was so happily astounded that I gave up on my begging for the console and switched into "you should play this and this and oh you'll love this..." mode.
I plan to start out slow with Wii Sports, then maybe through in a sports game, and if my holiday wish list works out I'll be able to teach him all about Super Mario Galaxy.
If I ever had any doubts about the magical entity that is Nintendo (I'm sure I never have) then this has squelched them. The company is officially the holy grail in my eyes. They've somehow managed to make this often thought of immature and complicated pass time into an accessible and fun for all ages, gender, race, creed, whatever, amazing thing. I'm continually astounded by what Nintendo has done with the industry. When my dad is interested in playing one of their systems, I know they're more successful then they'll ever know.
Now I'm even more excited for opening my beautiful 360 and Wii games this year!
X-Play did a segment today about what to buy for different genres and consoles during the holidays. I generally enjoy the show and reviews even if G4 is a reminder of the brutal death of TechTV. I will forever love my former geeky coworkers for showing me that there use to be a wonderful video game show on the air (I'm a bit young to have seen it in it's prime, but that's what the internet is for).
From their list here are the games I have added to my "buy when I have enough money to pay rent" fund:
Playstation 2: Ratchet and Clank, God of War 2, Odin Sphere, Shin Megami Tensei
PC: The Witcher, Gears of War, The Orange Box
360: Bioshock, Dead Rising
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4
Nintendo DS: Rune Factory, Glory Days 2
I realize how lame I am for not already owning some of those (Ratchet and Clank, Gears of War, Metroid Prime, etc.) but give me a break! Video games are expensive!
I did, however, recently obtain a full-time permanent position at my job so after July when I'm done paying 500$ a month to pay off financial aid I fully plan on using that money to expand my collection significantly. Woot!
